Credit Card Tips for College Students

Student Credit Cards

Student credit cards can be very useful for young people who are just starting to establish their credit scores. You can spend money in a way that will benefit you later in life as opposed to spending cash, which does you no good in the long run except to keep you out of debt. However, it can be easy to get into financial trouble if you don't have any financial experience or money management skills. We offer useful tips for college students who want to manage their credit card properly.

Spend money wisely.

Just because people have a lot of things it does not mean they are rich. It means that they spend a lot of money. If you don't want to accumulate debt, then keep in mind that student credit cards are not free money. You borrow funds from the credit card issuer and you have to return the debt with interest.

When you spend money on your student credit card, make sure that it is money that you would have spent anyway with cash. It is important not to charge more money than can be paid back at the end of the billing cycle. Large charges, for example travel expenses, should be covered within a calendar year. You need always make more than the minimum monthly payments. It will help you eliminate your debt sooner.

Keep in mind that your debt/available credit ratio (also called the utilization ratio) should be less than 30%. You can reduce your expenses by visiting the library instead of a bookstore or using free communication tools. If you live in an area with good public transportation, maybe you do not need a car. You'll save lots of money on insurance, gasoline and maintenance.

Know your credit score.

All credit companies regularly report your credit card usage and payment history to the three major credit bureaus - Experian, Equifax and TransUnion. This information will be used to calculate your credit score. That's why your student credit card provides you a great opportunity to build a positive credit history and ensure your successful financial life. The main guidelines you need to follow are to pay your bills on time and not to overspend.

Even though college students don't have long credit history, it is a good idea to regularly review your credit report. It is used to make important decisions concerning your ability to rent an apartment, get a job, obtain insurance and qualify for credit cards and loans.

Credit reports should contain accurate and up to date information. If there are any mistakes, contact the credit bureau in writing and ask them to investigate your claim. If they find the proof of your words, they will change incorrect data.

Start a rainy day fund.

According to financial experts, the people without a rainy day fund are more likely to accumulate debt in case of emergency. It may seem like you cannot afford to have one, but the truth is that you cannot afford not to have one. Emergency funds are essential, so start saving immediately. The goal is to have 3 - 6 months of living expenses in your rainy day fund. A decent savings pot will help you make payments after a job loss or other life-changing accident.

I think that it's very difficult to save money when you are a student. There are so many temptations for young people that we can't leave money for a rainy day.
