Do like to visit new countries and discover new cultures? If you are a passionate traveler, then credit cards can really help you abroad. You probably know that is not always safe to carry cash in your wallet as there is a threat of being robbed.
Today credit card companies and banks issue hundreds of credit cards for you to use in foreign countries. So before you go traveling for business or for pleasure, don't forget to take your plastic card with you! All you have to do is swipe your card and get everything you want! But be careful, don't spoil your credit score, read the card's terms and conditions!
First of all it is very comfortable to use your plastic card in foreign countries. You don't have to be afraid that your wallet will be stolen and you will be left without any money far away from your mother land. Most credit cards issued by major credit card companies like MasterCard, American Express or Discover are accepted by most retailers world wide.
There are other benefits from credit card usage abroad:
- Credit cards are safe. All good credit cards offer an insurance policy, so you will be covered in case your credit card is lost or stolen. You will also get a list of toll-free numbers where you can call in case of emergency. The insurance will cover all expenses concerning the replacement of your plastic.
But you have to know that when you are in your native country, the insurance covers all your expenses if you are not satisfied with quality of goods you purchased, but when you are in a foreign country, things often don't work this way! Sometimes it is impossible to get a refund. If there is no agreement between the supplier of goods and your credit card company, you will not be able to get a refund. That's why you have to check this information with your credit card issuer as not all countries have this kind of consumer protection.
- Foreign currency is the biggest issue for most travelers when they travel in foreign countries. The exchange rate varies greatly from one bank to another. Sometimes, looking for a better deal, people exchange currency from unofficial exchangers and get nothing, but trouble!
Last summer my friend Bill went to Turkey and decided to exchange money from an unofficial exchanger. He simply got ripped off and as a result he lost over $200!
But if you use your credit card abroad, you don't even need to worry about currency exchange! In case you need some cash, you can simply go to ATM machine and get it safely.
But you have to be aware of foreign transaction fees! These fees are not really high, usually 2% of the purchase price, but if you want to make a big purchase, it can be pretty expensive. So before using your card to pay for a big purchase, contact your credit card company and find out all about the fees for overseas transactions!
You also have to be careful in your credit card usage (and not only abroad) in order not to spoil your credit score. Enjoy your trip and benefit from the credit card offers available on the market!
